How to Balance Your Main Job with Your Side Gig

According to the latest U.S. Census data, approximately 13 million Americans have more than one job.

That’s about 25 percent of the population.  Have we shocked you yet?  Keep in mind, those are only working adults who have reported having a second job. There is another large percentage of people who have side gigs but haven’t reported them in the census.

So, how do they do it? Are they robots living on 4 hours of sleep and several pots of coffee?  Not likely. Many are embracing the world of freelancing, commission-based work, artistic jobs and other “passion projects” while maintaining a traditional 9 to5 job.  Platforms like Upwork and even SalesGig has helped foster an environment that helps individuals expand their knowledge and network and earn some extra cash at the same time.  With rising costs for education and technology, it’s no wonder people are relying on side hustles!

There are a number of industries that take time to break into and so many turn to finding employment in positions they may not love working.  Working a side gig with the industry you love while maintaining your main job can be a great way to enter the field and get connected in the meantime.

Time Management

Oh, those two dreaded words: time management.  A necessary evil for many adults.  Without it, many find themselves unable to effectively balance their main job and their side gig, often letting something drop.  For many, that means compulsory hours at your main job and “after hours” and/or weekends for your side gig.  Others shift the big focus to the side gigs they want to focus on long term.

Stay Organized

With deadlines, priorities and curve balls being thrown at you, you’ll need to find a way to stay on top of everything and these days, technology makes being organized a bit easier. From calendar apps and notes apps, voice recording apps and even a mind mapping tool, there’s something for everyone.

Be Ready for Burnout

While there are some who are able to handle the stress of working multiple jobs, the rest of us walk around like zombies on the verge of snapping.  Balancing two jobs is stressful.  There is such a thing as side gig burnout.  Many try to keep pushing through the burn out instead of taking the time to recharge their batteries.  Self-care is as important to your personal life as it is to balancing jobs.

Finding what works may not come right away.  You may find it tough to get in a routine and balance your main job and side gig when you first get going.  Don’t get discouraged.  There are plenty of resources out there to help.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
