What Makes A Great Referral Email?

In a business all about referrals, SalesGig seeks to shed some light on what makes a great referral email.

All right, you’ve created your account on SalesGig and reached out to a company that you’re able to provide a referral to.  They’ve asked you to provide an email introduction/referral to the other party.  What does your email say?  What should you include?  And more to the point, what constitutes a GREAT referral email?  After all, if you’ve done your job well, it can mean new relationships, repeat business, and lucrative sale commissions in addition to great reviews.

Why Referrals?

First, it’s healthy to remember why we’re doing this.  Outside of the fact that you can earn extra cash for referrals on SalesGig’s website, referrals are FOUR times as likely to complete a sale as opposed to an ordinary sale (source: DCR Strategies).  Company decision makers are more likely to do business with someone that was referred to them by a trusted professional.  With referrals being one of the highest converting lead sources, it’s no wonder companies are signing up to connect with referral partners to secure an introduction from a trusted professional - you. That’s right.  You, a business professional, have built relationships with people in your network, those relationships have built trust between you.

Tips to Writing a Great Referral Email

Create a catchy subject line.  One of the biggest challenges is getting someone to open an email, especially if the email is coming from someone they don’t know.  However, you’re one step ahead of it here because they know you and they trust you. The trick here is being straight forward.  A catchy subject line does not mean getting overly creative with emojis and sirens and “hip” phrases, however, the right subject line can ensure your email is opened in a timely fashion.

Get to the point: be direct about why you’re emailing them.  Keep your email simple and on message.  Provide the introduction and a line about how the company you’re referring can benefit the person you’re emailing.

Keeping all that in mind, let’s take a look at an example:

Subject: Derek, meet Angela at XYZCorp!

Body:

Good afternoon, Derek!

I hope this finds you well.  I wanted to connect you with Angela at XYZCorp. XYZCorp sells printing services to your industry, and I know you are in the market for a new vendor. Angela and her team do fantastic work and come highly recommended.

Angela would like to schedule a time to connect this week.  Do you have any available slots where we could get the conversation started?

Mark

While there may be occasions you’ll want to include a little bit more in there, a short, to-the-point email can be a great way to set the stage.  You may want to expand a bit more, for instance, if there are any personal connections these companies may have, or if you have previous experience with either company that you can draw on.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
